Check out these new Lärabar flavors I tried this week!

First of all, I was really uncertain about the Pistachio because I am not a pistachio person and was certain I would hate it. However, because it was a blend of dates, pistachios, and cashews, it was actually really good! I enjoyed it WAY more than I anticipated. Secondly, the Peanut Butter and Jelly flavor is one of my new favorites, it tastes just like the real thing! Way to go guys on this one, its absolutely delicious!

Third was Conconut Cream Pie; holy moly this one was tasty! I am a total sucker for coconut so naturally I thought this one was to die for. However, because of all the coconut inside this little bar, I found it to be a little more crumbly then the others. Last was Key Lime Pie. This was another surprise to me. I am NOT a lime person at all and was again certain I was not going to love this one. But Lärabar did it again and created the perfect blend of cashews, almonds, coconut, and lime juice! SOO good! I actually bought another one of these at Jewel this weekend!

I would recommend all of these Lärabar flavors to everyone out there, it’s hard to pick a favorite!

Saving money is on everyone’s mind these days so why not utilize the ingredients you already have in your cupboard to make simple, portable, and healthy snacks! You can customize your own breakfast bars using your favorite cereals, nuts, and dried fruit for the whole family to enjoy without worrying about all of the preservatives added in store bought ones. You can even add flax seed or wheat germ to make them a bit more nutritious. It’s so easy and nutritious you will wonder why you haven’t been making your own breakfast bars all these years! There are thousands of different recipes out there on the web, but here is one of our favorites from seriouseats.com that contains a little bit of everything:

  • 2 cups rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup raw sunflower seeds
  • 1 cup sliced almonds
  • 1/2 cup wheat germ
  • 1/4 cup shaved coconut
  • 2 tablespoons flax seeds
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 ounce unsalted butter, more to grease pan
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 6 1/2 ounces dried fruit (cranberries, raisins, blueberries, cherries, chopped apricots)
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9-inch square baking dish, set aside
  2. Spread oats, sunflower seeds, almonds, wheat germ, coconut, and flax seed on a baking sheet and toast in oven, stirring 3 to 4 times, until just barely browned (about 15 to 20 minutes)
  3. A few minutes before toasting is complete, place honey, brown sugar, butter, vanilla, and salt in a saucepan over medium heat (you’ll need enough room in the saucepan to add the dry ingredients later)
  4. Heat, stirring, until butter is melted and sugar is completely dissolved. Reduce heat to low, and add the toasted dry ingredients
  5. Add the dried fruit to the mixture and toss until evenly coated
  6. Reduce oven heat to 300 degrees. Transfer mixture to prepared baking dish, pushing everything down until well-packed. Bake 25 to 30 minutes.
  7. Remove, allow to cool completely and cut into squares

** Feel free to swap some of the ingredients to make it your own! For example, use brown rice syrup or agave nectar instead of honey, choose from any variety of dried fruits and nuts, even add chocolate chips or peanut butter chips to your recipe!

Making your own breakfast bars are naturally healthy and nutritious. The carbohydrates in the cereal provide you with energy and the protein found in nuts help build muscle. Also, the omega-3 fatty acids in flax seed, the vitamin E in the wheat germ, as well as the potassium found in the dried fruit all promote a healthy heart!

Don’t be afraid to play around and create your own breakfast bar recipe to find the perfect one that suits you! Share your ideas and recipes with Eat Chic!Enjoy this post? Share it with your Facebook friends!
